PGA TOUR Q SCHOOL 1st Round

October 27th, 2009 by butch in Q School 2009

There’s a day in every golfer’s life where they play better than the score reflects.  Today was that day for John. We were paired with two pleasant young gentleman, Steve Sokol, from Milford, CT who shot 76 and Brian Hollins from Philadelphia, PA who also shot 76, while our score for the day was 78.

The wind was a tremendous factor today, blowing up to 25 mph and howling in spots, which is not only challenging for tee and iron shots but putting as well. John had a marvelous front nine, shooting even par, and felt comfortable going into the 10th hole.  Unfortunately, he lost his teeball  out of bounds to the right by a couple feet.  Through the course of the back nine, John also incurred two penalty strokes -water balls on successive holes.  Statistically the score was 78 but he hit 9 fairways , 14 greens in regulation and hit 34 putts.  His ball striking was outstanding for the most part, except for out of bounds and wind misjudgement on the water balls.

He is currently in the bottom third of scoring but we feel confident that with good play we can improve and move ahead 10 spots per day to complete at 4 under par. We play tomorrow  with the same group beginning on the 10th hole at 8:41am.

Tonight is rest time.

    John,
    Round 1:
I like and agree with Butch’s comment regarding you being among the best in golf world. Just keep doing what you teach us — relax, swing, forget that last shot and most of all stay confident. Only 25% behind you which means you have 3 more opportunities to EXCEL!! Keep your head down John, we’re with you.
    Gerald
